Trump would 'very likely' withdraw US from WHO again, says key ally

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, a Republican from Georgia, repeated misinformation about threats to U.S. national sovereignty and warned that a second Trump administration would pull out of the World Health Organization again.

    By Michael Igoe // 14 December 2023

If former U.S. President Donald Trump wins a second term in office next year, his administration will “very likely” withdraw the United States from the World Health Organization again, a key congressional ally said Wednesday.

“I can also assure you in a future Trump administration, given the way the WHO conducted itself, it could be very likely that we withdraw again from the WHO,” Marjorie Taylor Greene, a conservative Republican from Georgia, said during a hearing of the House of Representatives Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Pandemic.

Greene’s warning stemmed from a belief held by some Americans that current efforts to negotiate an international agreement on pandemic preparedness and response risks undermining U.S. national sovereignty. U.S. global health leaders repeatedly stated Wednesday that those concerns are unfounded.
