Jos Timmerman

Jos Timmerman is senior expert in international climate change adaptation and disaster risk management with special focus on IWRM in transboundary settings. He is an internationally oriented, analytically strong advisor with a good eye for detail without losing the overall picture. Much of his career he has worked with the Dutch Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management and has extensive knowledge of water management, water policies and water related climate policies. Among others, he supported the World Water Assessment Programme in developing the World Water Development Report 2020 on climate. He supported the Mekong River Commission in doing a policy analysis and in developing an adaptation strategy for the Lower Mekong Basin. He developed, organised and performed a Training of Trainers on Adaptive Delta Management in Bangladesh for the implementation of the Bangladesh Delta Plan 2100. From 1995 onwards he is involved in the work under the 1992 UNECE Water Convention, dealing with monitoring and assessment, and with adaptation in transboundary basins. He, among others, led the development of the good practices and lessons learned publication on transboundary adaptation in water management and the Words into Action Implementation Guide for Addressing Water-Related Disasters and Transboundary Cooperation. He worked with the European Topic Centre on Climate Change impacts, vulnerability and Adaptation (ETC-CCA), was involved in the Dutch Delta Programme, and was involved in several (inter)national projects on climate change adaptation. Currently he is self-employed and works on (transboundary) water management, water governance, climate change adaptation, disaster risk management and monitoring and assessment. Jos holds an MSc in Biology and a PhD in Life Sciences, both from Wageningen University in Wageningen, The Netherlands. He has published over 70 papers and reports of which 12 in peer-reviewed scientific journals and 5 (authored or edited) books.
