Duties and Responsibilities

  • Organizational Setting:
    • UNDRR is the UN focal point for disaster risk reduction, coordinating efforts across the UN system and with regional organizations.
    • Led by the UN Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Disaster Risk Reduction (SRSG), UNDRR has over 140 staff at headquarters in Geneva and in regional offices.
    • UNDRR guides, monitors, analyses, and reports on the implementation of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030, supporting regional and national implementation, catalyzing action, and raising global awareness.
    • The internship is located in the UNDRR Regional Office for the Arab States (ROAS) in Cairo, Egypt.
    • The internship is unpaid, full-time, in-person, and interns work five days per week under the supervision of the External Relations Officer.
  • Intern Responsibilities:
    • Social Media Support:
      • Assist in developing and scheduling engaging content for social media platforms.
      • Monitor social media trends and engagement metrics; provide input for content improvement.
      • Support coverage of events, workshops, and campaigns.
      • Monitor media coverage and prepare summaries or media digests relevant to the office’s work.
    • Website and Digital Content Management:
      • Support regular updates to the office’s website, including uploading news items, event summaries, and multimedia content.
      • Assist in ensuring website content is accurate, timely, and aligned with corporate messaging.
    • Newsletter Development:
      • Contribute to drafting, formatting, and dissemination of newsletters.
      • Coordinate with various teams to collect content, stories, and visuals for inclusion.
    • Content Development:
      • Assist in drafting communication materials such as press releases, feature stories, talking points, and briefs.
      • Support development of visual assets in collaboration with graphic designers or using available tools.
    • Administrative and Coordination Support:
      • Assist in internal coordination for communications tasks.
      • Support documentation of communication efforts.
      • Perform other related duties as assigned by the supervisor.

Qualifications/Special Skills

  • Enrolled in or completed:
    • A graduate school program (second university degree or higher), or
    • The final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor’s degree or equivalent).
  • Good knowledge of standard software applications, especially MS Word, PowerPoint, and Teams.
  • Ability to draft news articles and/or social media posts is required.
  • Ability to design surveys and polls is desired.
  • Experience with content management systems (CMS), photo editing software, web analytics, accessibility is desired.
  • Knowledge in copywriting, editing, and translating web content from English to Arabic is desired.

Languages

  • Fluency in spoken and written Arabic and English is required.
  • Knowledge of an additional official UN language is an advantage.
  • UN official languages: Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian, and Spanish.

Additional Information

  • No prior professional work experience is required. Relevant fields of study include Marketing, Business Administration, Public Information, Digital Communications, Social Media, Web Content Management, or related fields.
  • Applicants must be students in the final year of a Bachelor’s, Master’s, or Ph.D. program, or have completed such a program. Proof will be requested at a later stage.
  • Interns are responsible for travel, visa, accommodation, health insurance, and other living expenses.

  • Costs and arrangements for travel, visas, accommodation, and living expenses are the responsibility of interns or their sponsoring institutions.
  • Non-citizens or non-permanent residents may need appropriate visas and work/employment authorization.
