OHCHR is the leading UN entity on human rights, with an independent mandate to promote and protect human rights globally and mainstream human rights throughout the UN system.
The Economic, Social, and Cultural Rights (ESCR) Section:
Leads OHCHR’s thematic work on economic, social, and cultural rights.
Contributes to global policy development and provides advice and technical support to OHCHR country and regional offices, as well as human rights components of UN peace missions.
Promotes the indivisibility of human rights across the Office and engages with multiple stakeholders to advocate for ESCR promotion and protection.
Conducts research and analysis to develop OHCHR policy positions.
Supports the High Commissioner’s advocacy on ESCR.
Fulfills General Assembly and Human Rights Council mandates related to ESCR.
Ensures collaboration with UN human rights mechanisms.
Strengthens partnerships with UN entities, cities, local governments, national human rights institutions, and civil society to integrate ESCR in their work.
The ESCR Section is part of the Development and Economic and Social Issues Branch (DESIB) within the Thematic Engagement, Special Procedures and Right to Development Division (TESPRDD).
The intern will report to a designated Human Rights Officer.
Responsibilities of the intern include providing substantive, organizational, and logistical assistance to the ESCR Section.
Qualifications / Special Skills
Must meet one of the following:
Enrolled in or have completed a graduate school program in Law, International Relations, Political Science, Development, or related field (second university degree or higher).
Enrolled in or have completed the final academic year of a first university degree program in Law, International Relations, Political Science, Development, or related field (minimum bachelor’s degree or equivalent).
No prior professional experience is required.
Field of study must be closely related to the type of internship applied for.
Must provide proof of enrollment or completion of the relevant degree program.
Knowledge in human rights and/or economic, social, and cultural rights is desirable.
Proficiency in standard software applications, especially MS Word, MS PowerPoint, and MS Teams.
Languages
Fluency in English (spoken and written) is required.
Knowledge of an additional official UN language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, Spanish) is an advantage.
Additional Information / Intern Specifics
Interns are not financially remunerated by the UN.
Travel, visa, accommodation, and living expenses are the responsibility of the intern or sponsoring institution.
Non-citizen interns may require appropriate visa and work/employment authorization.
