Duties and Responsibilities

  • Work in the Multimedia Resources Unit (MRU) of the Audiovisual Services Section, Coverage and Media Services Branch, News and Media Division, Department of Global Communications.
  • Support MRU’s mandate to provide audiovisual library and archival services and distribute multimedia content to internal and external clients.
  • Work under the supervision of the Chief of the Multimedia Resources Unit.
  • Interns may be assigned to one or more multimedia libraries (Photo or Audiovisual Library) based on background and references.
  • Receive training in multimedia archival collections management, including:
    • Preservation of audiovisual materials
    • Accessibility and metadata management
    • Client services and outreach
  • Collaborate with experienced information management professionals to gain hands-on experience in library and archival operations.

Qualifications/Special Skills

  • Enrolled in or completed a graduate school programme (second university degree or higher) or final year of a first university degree programme (bachelor’s level or equivalent).
  • Computer literate in standard word processing and spreadsheet applications.
  • Keen interest in the work of the United Nations and commitment to its ideals.
  • Ability to interact successfully with individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds and beliefs.
  • Preferred fields of study: library science, audiovisual (AV) archives, communications, information science, media studies, journalism, or related programs.
  • Master’s or Ph.D. level candidates or those who have completed these programs are eligible.
  • Desirable skills:
    • Social media posting
    • Data and metadata entry for long-term preservation and management
    • Proficiency in MS Word, MS PowerPoint, MS Teams

Languages

  • Fluency in English required.
  • Knowledge of another UN official language is an advantage.

Additional Information

  • Interns are not financially remunerated; travel, visa, accommodation, and living expenses are the responsibility of the intern or sponsoring institution.
  • Non-citizens may require appropriate visa or work authorization.
  • Official certificate of academic enrollment or completion may be requested later.

Intern-Specific Requirements

  • A completed online application (Cover Note and Personal History Profile) is required.
  • The Cover Note must include:
    • Current degree program and graduation date
    • List of IT skills and software proficiency
    • Top three areas of interest
    • Explanation of why the candidate is best suited for this internship
    • Explanation of interest in the UN Internship Programme
  • Applicants who are children or siblings of UN staff are ineligible.
  • Professional work experience is not required but field of study must relate to the internship
