Working in conservation: 3 things for globaldev pros to know

“We have to understand that this [conservation] is about saving our own species. This is about having the right ecosystems that give us food and that maintain our life on this planet.”

    — Grethel Aguilar, director-general, IUCN

Amid the triple planetary crisis of climate change, pollution, and biodiversity loss, conservation is essential. Experts shared with Devex what the development sector should know about considering a career in this field:

Conservation isn’t just for conservationists. While many conservationists are scientists, Grethel Aguilar, director-general of IUCN, highlights how diverse roles intersect with conservation. WWF collaborates with Care International on gender-based violence and climate change, and with World Vision on Indigenous plants and school feeding. “We need to complement each other, not compete,” she says.

Conservation doesn’t mean restricted areas. There are initiatives that create multiuse landscapes, says Craig Moritz, an evolutionary biologist and director of the research school of biology at Australian National University. In Australia, Indigenous protected areas allow communities to live on biodiverse land, preserving it while working with researchers.

It’s a hopeful space. Despite alarming figures — over 45,300 species threatened with extinction, according to ICUN’s Red List — Aguilar sees many positive developments. “I’ve seen Indigenous peoples restore landscapes, communities managing water, and politicians engaged in the upcoming plastics treaty,” she says, adding that it’s not uncommon for certain species thought to be extinct to make a comeback following “incredible conservation efforts.”

Elevator pitch: “For the past 20 years, my mission has been to strengthen the security of customary, Indigenous Peoples, and informal tenure across Africa, Asia, and Central America. We all have a role to play in securing tenure rights. During my 13 years with the U.N., I mostly collaborated with governments to adapt tenure governance to better meet citizens’ needs through policy reforms. Today, as a consultant, I work also with investors, projects, and companies to transform tenure from a liability into an asset. I use tools like participatory mapping, Fit-for-Purpose Land Administration, and geotechnologies to mitigate risks, improve targeting, and enhance sustainability through secure tenure.”

    Around the watercooler

News and views from around global development worth knowing about.

    • Where do the U.N. Sustainable Development Goals stand? Just five countries have either ended child marriage or are on track to do so by 2030.

    • Climate change is disrupting education. Schools in India are struggling to cope with rising temperatures, leading to closures and disruptions in education.

    • When will there be gender equality in positions of power? The low number of women’s voices at UNGA undermines the very goals nations pledged to achieve with the SDGs.
